【2000－2009】NME誌が選ぶこの10年間のベストアルバムにストロークスのデビュー作
2009年も大詰めを迎え世界中の音楽メディアで00年代のベストアルバムを選出する企画が相次いでいる。今回はUKのメジャー音楽誌NMEのセレクションから。
上位から順に1位にThe Strokes『Is This It』、2位The Libertines『Up The Bracket』、3位Primal Scream『xtrmntr』、4位Arctic Monkeys『Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not』、5位にYeah Yeah Yeahs『Fever To Tell』とプライマル・スクリームを除いては2000年代にデビューしたバンドの初期作がいずれもランクインした。
デビュー当時のインパクトがそのまま票に繋がったとも取れる結果だが、ベテランの中ではPJ Harveyの名盤と誉れ高い2000年作『Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea』が6位、デジタル販売で購入者が値段を付けるという画期的販売方法で話題となった10位Radiohead『In Rainbows』や14位『Kid A』と、レディオヘッド同様、時代をリードして来た存在といえるジャック・ホワイト率いるThe White Stripesが18位『Elephant』19位『White Blood Cells』と両者2作品がランク入りしている。
NMEの紙面を反映したかのように、イギリスのバンドのリリースと、アメリカン・インディー・シーンの名作と言われる作品が混合したセレクションとなったベスト50。デビュー当時からUK主導で盛り上がったアメリカのThe Strokesが1位になったのは若干意外ではあった、圧倒的にバンド作品が多い点や、ゴシップ枠で多いに盛り上げてきたAmy Winehouseが27位止まりなど、やはりロック誌らしい10年間の総括となっている。
